Basalt – Where Life Flows

Welcome to our community! Located at the heart of the Roaring Fork Valley between Aspen and Glenwood Springs, Basalt is one of Colorado’s best kept secrets. Easily accessible, yet tucked 18 miles away from the glitz, tourists and prices of Aspen, our friendly mountain town offers a little bit of everything.

We are the only town in North America located at the confluence of two Gold Medal fishing rivers. Whether you want to fly fish right in town, sail or paddle at the Ruedi Reservoir just 14 miles east, or test your kayak skills at the  Basalt Whitewater Park –we’re a Rocky Mountain haven for water sports enthusiasts.

But we don’t stop there. We offer world-class skiing within 30 minutes at your choice of five resort mountains and boast an abundance of trails that range from urban to backcountry. Plus, with local restaurants, galleries and boutiques in urbanesque developments like Willits Town Center and our charming, historic downtown, Basalt is an unexpected destination whether you’re just starting a family or retired.

We are also a community with historic roots but modern ideas – where everyone from artists to budding local entrepreneurs to anglers thrive in a culture that’s uniquely Basalt. Some people say we’re what Aspen was like 30 years ago. Whether you’re looking for an inclusive community where neighbors know each other, a more affordable alternative to Colorado resort towns, off-the-beaten-path cultural gems, or river and mountain adventure, you’ll find Basalt at the confluence of it all.

We may be small, but we are mighty and beautiful. Explore the different areas of the Community section to learn more.
